How I Work
Therapy is a partnership between client and therapist. Clients are asked to identify what they want from therapy. My responsibility is to guide clients effectively and efficiently toward their goals. In our partnership, we identify obstacles and co-create strategies for moving ahead.
This process can be challenging, complex, and confusing, and because every client approaches it differently, I use a range of approaches. Deepening an accurate self understanding, relaxation techniques, and rediscovering inner resources are the approaches I have found to be most useful.
By “staying with” and hearing my client clearly and honestly wherever he or she is at each moment of our encounter—with respect, curiosity, and compassion; and without criticism or personal judgment—I invite my client to join in the process of accomplishing therapy goals. As this journey unfolds, my clients often achieve not only their desired treatment goals, but a deeper understanding of their life’s purpose and meaning.
I view psychotherapy as a developmental process. As the partnership matures, so do the client's accomplishments and newly-mastered skills. Ultimately, I see the goal of psychotherapy as cultivating clients' capacity to become the expert navigator of their journey.
